Heart of a ChampionExercise Your Heart Without Breaking a Sweat
Teenagers aren’t known for selfless devotion to others. But given an opportunity, most have a generous spirit, especially if it showcases their talent and energy. That’s what the Heart of a Champion Free-Throw-a-thon is all about. The St. Pius boys and girls basketball teams sponsored this fundraiser to help the Heart Hospital of New Mexico Foundation. “The heart is a symbol of passion. These boys are using their passion for their sport to raise money for the foundation’s mission to promote cardiovascular wellness for all New Mexicans,” said Terry Harris of the Heart Hospital Foundation. “It’s a great match-up.”
Girls and Boys basketball teams from St. Pius put their skills to work to see how many free throws they can make in an hour. The team members got pledges or straight donations from friends and family. Harris said “This fundraiser is a great way for them to learn how to look outside themselves, to the needs of others and the community that supports them. This is something the kids look forward to doing each year.”
With about 70 players shooting in groups of three, the teams hope to bring in a generous donation to help the Heart Hospital Foundation in its community education, health and wellness programs. They include the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program which places lifesaving devices in businesses and organizations.
The teams raised close to $4,000 for AED’s this year!
